Welcome

Animals have intrinsic value for society. They've been fundamental to Australia's history and development as a nation and are of ongoing importance as a source of companionship, food, fibre and other products.   Our unique and fascinating native species feature prominently in Indigenous culture, are depicted by tourism enterprises and inspire the naming of many sporting teams.

Scientific studies show that inadequate welfare standards compromise the growth, reproduction and survival of animals. It's therefore important to ensure that appropriate levels of animal welfare are provided - this is a personal responsibility for anyone who interacts with animals in any way. In South Australia the Animal Welfare portfolio is administered by the Minister for Environment and Conservation.  Animal Welfare has impacts across all government agencies.
